"The Worst Things In Life Come Free To Us" - A Kirk/McCoy fic preview (Star Trek AOS 'Verse)
So… uh, yeah, life, reasons, but I swear I’m writing. This is proof.
So any of you who follow me because of Sherlock, this… is not Sherlock. Not even Holmes related. This is Star Trek. I’ve not given up on my Sherlock fics. I’m currently working hard on the one I was prompted with for the AO3 Auction (and man, I’m seriously agonising over like, every single word, which is a good thing). But lately I’ve had a LOT of McKirk (or Jones, or whatever moniker you wish to give the OTP of one Starfleet Captain Kirk and his cantankerous CMO Dr. McCoy) feels, and I’ve seen Star Trek: Into Darkness like, 5 times, and these stupid feels will not go away (fuck you, Karl Urban, I want to quit you but I can’t goddammit). So, uh, yeah, this is one of those ideas that popped up in my brain yesterday and wouldn’t go away until I wrote some of it. And some of it turned into… like 1200 words…
OK so below the cut is the part of this story that I’ve got right now, and I’m sharing it with you lovely people, because you are awesome and I adore you.
Scene Setup: Reboot Universe, post STID but no spoilers for either movie thus far. Kirk & McCoy are married. That’s really about all I can tell you without giving away the details of what’s about to happen. And no, this isn’t a happy story. This is a sad, sad, angsty unhappy story that made me cry outright as I was writing it. But, I totes plan on there being a semi-sweet/happy ending. I SWEAR.

So, uh…
I broke my foot a few weeks ago. Hairline fracture, but it hurt like a mother, and it’s still healing. (If you follow my other blog, there’s a fun little write-up about it here and here.)
Anyways.
I’ve been writing - slowly - and I’ve signed up for NaNoWriMo (my username on there is Ricechex, for anyone who wants to bother me and nag me about my word count), so the words should get flowing much more soon.
And in other news, someone contacted me about translating Faith Like A Child into Russian! *SQUEE!* I cannot even try to put into words just how excited this makes me. So, yeah, hey, first translation for one of my stories! THIS MAKES ME WANT TO CRY WITH JOY. Should it come to fruition, I’ll link it on this blog.
I hope that everyone who celebrates it has had a wonderful Halloween/Samhain. The Consulting 6-year-old was Thor, thus transforming herself into THE 6-YEAR-OLD OF THUNDER. I even got her to say, “Thank you, Midgardian,” every time she got candy. Best Mom Ever? It’s possible.
Well, NaNoWriMo starts in 3 hours - so I need to go chug some Mountain Dew, and get ready to get writing! See you all again soon! Toodle-pip!

I really liked the early conceptualization of this one, but the execution was a little rote. I also didn’t like that it occasionally switched tenses. I’d say read it, but be prepared for melodrama of Twilight-esque proportions. 6/10.

Potential - A Molly/Irene Fic (Chapter? Probably) for FridaFrag
So, today the lovely FridaFrag wrote a post about the Irene/Molly ship in BBC Fanfiction, and I have to say, the lady makes a very good point. It wasn’t even something I’d noticed (mostly because I haven’t gone looking for Molly/Irene fics), but it got me thinking. Which is dangerous, you know. So I started thinking, and that gave me an idea, and so just a little while ago I sat down and wrote about 1400 words of this fic idea.
The main issue she touched on was the fact that, between John and Sherlock, we are constantly treated to the revelation of discovering love - John’s not gay! Sherlock doesn’t do anyone! And yet, they come together in our fics, finding each other and falling in love and having lots of GAY SEXIN’S. But with the Molly/Irene pairing, there’s very little explanation as to what brought them together, how Molly might cope with this - she has, after all, been pining away for Sherlock since the first episode, and she, “went out three times,” with Jim - thus far, there’s about as much evidence for her being gay/bi/anything other than heterosexual as there is for John being anything other than the heterosexual best mate to a strange and enigmatic man. (Please be aware - I AM talking canonically here. John has never shown an actual interest in men, nor any sort of romantic/sexual interest in Sherlock, regardless of what our shipper hearts WANT to see. Because trust me, my shipper heart is all about the long glances, etc. But that’s me projecting - Sherlock and John aren’t a romantic couple, in the canon. And that’s what I’m basing this on.)
With John, we are often given a journey, a chance for him to discover his feelings on the idea that he is NOT 112% heterosexual. We see him become curious, see him deny, see him accept. With Molly, many of the stories are mostly about Iren being a BAMF-y dominatrix, and Molly being submissive.
But where are the journeys for Molly? So hey, I started one.
Really, this more a chapter than a one-shot, but since I’m currently rather busy with a bunch of other projects as well, this will likely be a back-seat fic, one that I work on when I need a break from the main fics I’m writing. And who knows, it might even turn out good.
And, because this is long enough already, more beneath the cut. DFTBA my darlings.

I just wanted to say, I’m REALLY sorry about the delays between chapter updates. My excuse is, again, life and reasons. Life and Reasons include but are not limited to:
- The Consulting 5-year-old starting First Grade. SOMEONE SEND HELP I WAS NOT READY FOR THIS.
- The Consulting 5-year-old doing gymnastics. She goes 3 days a week, and every class she’s picking up new skills. It’s both an exciting and slightly terrifying time.
- (YOU try being the parent of a 5-year-old who’s swingin’ around on the uneven bars or jumping around on a balance beam, and then tell me that shit’s not scary, for reals. And I WAS a gymnast [and a martial artist, mostly martial artist but sometimes gymnast] - I KNOW what can happen, which makes it all the more difficult.)
- Doctor Who and Parade’s End. I find it hard to concentrate when my Fangirl-Brain is SCREAMING at me, “OMFG THERE’S A NEW EPISODE OF WHO THERE’S A NEW EPISODE OF PARADE’S END WHY AREN’T WE WATCHING THEEEEEEEEEEEEEM WATCH THEM NOOOOOOOOW WHAT ARE YOU DOING THE WRITING CAN WAIT BENEDICT AND MATT ARE MORE IMPORTANT RIGHT NOOOOOOOW!”
- (No seriously, that’s how it sounds in my brain. My brain CAPSLOCKS a lot. I’ve adjusted.)
- My brother-in-law is getting married next month. There have, thus far, been a bridal shower and 2 bachelorette parties. We may still be having more festivities. We’re not yet sure.
- The Consulting 5-year-old is getting ready to become The Consulting 6-year-old. This is generally fine until I remember that I really have no ability to accept the concept - and subsequent fact - of her getting older.
- A new story that popped into my head. You may have seen the post about it. It’s a werewolf AU-Crossover thing that… I’m really enjoying. I AM NOT ABANDONING MY OTHER STORIES. So… you know, DON’T PANIC.
- (If you got the reference in that last bullet point, go get a cookie. Seriously. Right now. You deserve a cookie.)
So that’s part of what’s been slowing me down on the writing and updating. BUT. Please be aware that I am not (repeat: NOT) stopping work on any of them. They’re just taking a bit longer because right now, I’ve a lot going on. PLUS, I’m learning how to use GIMP to do things like make book covers (as you may have noticed) and… let’s face it, things like that are just FUN.
I do want to thank you all for sticking around, for reading, reviewing, liking, following, etc. You’re awesome, you’re amazing, you ARE the drive when I sometimes wonder if I’m doing fandom things right. I write for myself, but I’d be lying if I said that every word I write isn’t for all of you.
